Last month I gave you an article on the VIRUS which I hope

ANTI-PCB T The story behind this trojan horse is
sickening. Apparently one RBBS-PC sysop
and one PC-BOARD sysop started feuding
about which BBS system is better, and in
the end the PC-BOARD sysop wrote a trojan
and uploaded it to the rbbs SysOp under
ANTI-PCB.COM. Of course the RBBS-PC
SysOp ran it, and that led to quite a few
accusations and a big mess in general.
Lets grow up! Every SysOp has the right
to run the type of BBS that they please,
and the fact that a SysOp actually wrote
a trojan intended for another simply
blows my mind.
ALTCTRL.ARC T This program reputedly trashes boot
records. Other than that, I know nothing
about it.
ARC513.EXE T This hacked version of SEA's ARC.EXE
appears normal. However, it writes
over track 0 of your [hard] disk upon
usage, destroying the disk's boot sector.
ARC514.COM T This is completely similar to arc
version 5.13 in that it will overwrite
5
track 0 (boot sector) of your hard disk.
Also, I have yet to see an EXE version
of this program..
BACKALLY.COM 64512 T This sophisticated trojan will axe your

FAT table after a couple of months of
usage. Beware the delayed trojan!
Backally MAY only work on floppy disks,
but that sounds unlikely. Debug has
shown that BACKALLY formats a track at
one point as well as reading in the
amount of freespace on your disk. It may
only wipe out full disks, like NOTROJ.
Please, be wary! An included BAT file
comes with a request for donations to
“Some Ware" located in Frederickburg, VA.
Look out for other products from
Some Ware!
This once beneficial utility will
write/destroy sectors on your [hard] disk
drive. Use this with caution if you
acquire it, because it's more than likely
that you got a bad copy. è
This program supposedly gives you a
color directory of files on disk, but it
in fact scrambles your disks FAT
table.
This trojan, dated April 1, 1987,
destroys FAT tables. COMPRESS is
executed from a file named RUN-MEBAT and
is advertised as a Shareware 'ARC from
Borland!
This trojan shows some animated dancers
in color, and then proceeds to wipe out
your [hard] disk's FAT table. There is
another perfectly good copy of
DANCERS.BAS on BBS's around the country;
apparently the author altered a
legitimate program to do his dirty work.
DEFENDER.ARC T
DISCACHE EXE T
DISKSCAN EXE T
DMASTER T
DOSENOWS.EXE T
DPROTECT
DROID.EXE
T
54272 T
This trojan both writes to ROM bios and
formats [hard] disks. The Duplicators
claim credit for this trojan; be ware of
other products by them. Also, do not
confuse this trojan with DEFENDER by
Atari. The latter is a pirated program.
This program uses direct BIOS routines
to write to disk. Apparently, those BIOS
routines will scramble your FAT table.
Please see DISCACHE.WNG, a file that I'm
looking for myself, for more information.
This was a PC Magazine program to scan a
[hard] disk for bad sectors, but then a
joker edited it to WRITE bad sectors.
Also look for this under other names such
as SCANBAD.EXE and BADDISE_ EXE...
This is yet another FAT scrambler..
I'm still tracking this one down --
apparently someone wrote a FAT killer and
renamed it DOSKNOWS.EXE, so it would be
confused with the real, harmless DOSKNOWS
system-status utility. AI! I know for
sure is that the REAL DOSKNOWS EXE is
5376 bytes long. If you see something
called DOSKNOWS that isn't close to that
size, sound the alarm. More info on this
one.is welcorned -- a bagged specimen
especially.
Apperently someone tampered with the
original, legitimate version of DPROTECT
and turned it into a FAT table eater. è
This trojan appears under the guise of a
game. You are supposably an architech |
that controls futuristic droids in search
of relics. In fact, the program copies
C:\PCBOARD\PCBOARD DAT to
C:\PCBOARD\HELP\HLPX if PC-Board SysOps
run it from C:\PCBOARD
EGABTR T BEWARE! Description says something like
“improve your EGA display,” but when run
it deletes everything in sight and prints
"Arf! Arf! Got you!”
ELEVATOR.ARC T This poorly written trojan suggests in
the documentation that you run it on a
floppy. If you do not run it on a
floppy, Elevator chastises you for not
reading the documentation. Regardless of
what disk you run it on, Elevator will
erase your files. It MAY format disks
too; be careful. One more interesting
point to note: my name is plastered all
over this program; the writers attempt to
lay the blame for this trojan on me.
EMMCACHE ???? C This program is not exactly a trojan,
V. 1.0 but it may havethe capability of
destroying hard disks by:
A) Scrambling every file modified after
running the program,
B) Destroying boot sectors.
This program has damaged at least two
herd disks, yet there is a base of
happily registered users. Therefore, |
advise extreme caution if you decide to
use this program.
FILER EXE T One SysOp complained a while ago that
this program wiped out his 20 Megabyte
HD. I'm not so sure that he was correct
and/or telling the truth any more. I
have personally tested an excellent file
manager also named FILER.EXE, and it
worked perfectly. Also, many other
SysOp's have written to tell me that they
have like me used a FILER EXE with no
problems. If you get a program named
FILER EXE, it is probably allright, but
better to test it first using some
security measures.
FINANCE4 ARC ????7?? C This program is not a verified trojan,
but there is a file going around BBS's
warning that it may be trojan. In any:
case, execute extreme care with it. é
This "program" starts out with a very
nice color picture (of what I don't know)
and then proceeds to tell you that you
should be using your computer for better
things than games and graphics. After
making that point it trashes your all of
your disk drives, starting with disk A:.
Not only does Future scramble FATs, but
it also erases files. As far as I Know,
however, it erases only one sub-directory
tree level deep, thus hard disk users _
should only be seriously affected if they
are in the “root” directory. More
information about this is especially
welcome.
FUTURE.BAS T
This is another trojan horse written by
the infamous Dorn W. Stickle. I believe
that there are legitimate MAP EXEs
floating around.
due to the large number of viruses floating around, this article will
be continued in next months issue.

New Cambridge DOS Laptop
announced:
Cambridge Computer has let word
out on their long awaited new laptop.
The 3.5 1b. MS-DOS compatable
is reported to be an inch thick. It can
be configured to one 3.5" floppy
drive,two 3.5" floppies,or one 3.5"
floppy and one hard drive of 20 or
40 MEG capacity. This would position
the 290? in a cherished niche for DOS
laptops. MS-DOS users are clamoring
to get their hands on under 5 1b.
machines, and the new Sinclair will
be the first to offer that kind of
HARD DRIVE storage in a under 5 Ib.
laptop. The (non-confirmed) early
prices I've heard put the low-end
machine with one floppy at less than
$1500 and with a hard drive at less
than $2000.
The reigning “darling” of the
feather weight laptop set is the 4.4 Ib.
NEC Ultralite. The Ultralite comes
equipped with a 2400 BPS modem, a
1 MEG RAM DISK and a nice backlit
display. There is no hard drive
offered and you have to purchase the
external disk drive to get a parallel
printer port. Trying one at COMDEX I
found the keyboard to be a serious
drawback (and I use a 288), also
battery life is almost laughable at
less than 2 hrs. The lightest laptop
out with a hard drive would be the
new Compaq LTE, at a heavy 6.7 Ibs.
and $3000. Battery life on the LTE is
rated for 3.5 hrs.
8
At the other end of the spectrum
we have the new wave of pocket DOS
machines; the new Atari Portfolio
and the $2000 Poget. The Atari when
fully configured for DOS is fairly
pricey and you have to contend with
a tiny screen and keyboard. The one
drawback for the Poget may be it's
price (and perhaps a very expensive
mass storage system). It may not be
. fair to compare the new Sinclair with
these as they were meant for
different applications but at 3.5
1bs.the Sinclair could be encroaching
on some of their territory.
I've not heard of the Z90's battery
life,display,ports or keyboard. Also |
don't know if the new one will
behave anything like the 208, in
relation to task switching or built-in
software. Although Cambridge could
probably sell many of them; it would
be a shame to introduce another
me-too MS-DOS machine, but at 3.5
lbs it would be the lightest in it's
class.
To keep its weight down to this
level 1 would imagine it may not
utilize a conventional type keyboard
and may retain the same type used
on the 288. While I don't mind the
286's keys at all I'm not sure it can
gain wide acceptance. Also, I would
guess that the screen is not backlit. I
have to agree that most backlit LCD
screens are nicer than non-backlitI
also realise that it's the backlighting
that saps most of the energy in a
laptop's power pack and non-backlit
does not necessarily spell B-A-D as
proven by Apple's new Portable and
PSION's new line of Mobile
Computers (up to 75 hr. battery life
Itis of my belief that if its
important enough to do on a laptop
you should be able to do it away
from the power outlet.
I can only guess that it will be
black, and I'm not sure about it's
shape. If it's an inch thick; that
doesn't leave much room for a fold
out clamshell type screen and if its
configured like a 288 notebook type
then the screen might have to be
fairly squashed.
We'll have these questions
answered in April as that's when it's
due out. (So much for my guess that
Clive's next machine would be a RISC
desktop computer.)

HAS CHANGE OF
COMMAND
In a bold stroke of both the pen,
and the back of the hand, it was
decided by the Las Vegas T/S Users -
Group, that Ralph Hammer take
over the duties of "Group
Librarian". Meaning to say, that he
now gets all those dusty ole boxes to
store at HIS house.
Futhermore, it was resolved that
he contact several P/D Libraries, and
purchase sets of P/D software for
disemination and use within our own
Group. 2068 files will be backed up
on his LKdos system, along with any
1000/1500 files placed within the
confines of the Groups library.
Since most T/S Groups are getting
in on P/D libraries for their region,
we are not about to be left out in the
cold.
We feel that regional libraries will
only promote usage by T/S users
every where.

REVIEW OF
MAXCOM
am by.. Ralph Hammer
Within the confines of that great
new Terminal/BBS software of
MAXCOM, written by Larry Kenny,
and enhanced by Jack Dohaney, lies a
utility program called “Deluxe Move".
I would call it LUXURIOUS.
While running MAXCOM to see the
“How, What For, and Why’, I tried
out the "Deluxe Move" portion.
BRAVO, HORRAY, and THREE CHEERS,
Larry has reconcieved and brought
forth a beauty of a utility.
"Deluxe Move" lets you move
certain files, which are marked with
an "X", from one disk to another,
between drives and etc., with ease.
All you do is CATalog your disk,
mark the files to be moved, and the
computer does the rest. Who said
that this little TS can't do what the
Big Boys can ?? Wait till the guys
down at the office see this...
I] commandeered the "Deluxe
Move" program onto another disk,
modified it slightly for my use, made
a back-up, and set my sights on some
future work. Any "MOVEing" from
now on will be a joyride.
Thanks a million times over,
Larry and Jack. I luv ya for this one.

Well, Christmas is now past, the
kids and dads have gotten their new
toys, and we are embarking into a
new decade. Got some real goodies
for you all this month, so let's get
right to them.
Got a cali from Chuck Ridgway,
the librarian for our fellow TS Users
Group down in San Angelo, TX.
He mentioned that although Rod
Gowen of RMG Enterprises had
gotten hold of S/W and H/W from
EZKey, most of those items were
TS2068 specific. Chuck went on to
say that he has some TS 1000 items.

I recieved my very own copy of
MAXCOM from RMG Enterprises
the day after Christmas. And yes,
Virginia, MAXCOM is everything and
more that it's chalked up to be. I
don't claim to be a spokesman for
either RMG or Larry Kenny, but
I've got to tell you, if you haven't
gotten it as yet, chase those moths
out of your wallet, and pull out
twenty-five of those Washingtons.
MAXCOM will truly make your day.
Along with my order from RMG,
Rod Gowen sent a couple of flyers
on

some specials for sale. One of them
was a page-one of a four-pager
covering the inventory of his recent
WM] Data Systems buy-out. |
> won't steal any of his thunder, so get
off your duff, get on his mailing list,
and see what all he's got.
As reported earlier in this N/L, the
Harrisburg TS Users Group has
ceased operations, but the members
have joined in with other Groups.
Their informative N/L's will be
sorely missed by all of us.
The last page of this N/L will have
my one and only "CUBE-IT^
program. I'm releasing it to the
Public Domain files, if it's not already
there. If you haven't got this great
little 2068 program in your midst,
grab it now.
The Staff of “the Hacker" has
included a word search puzzle,
containing the names of TS User
Groups newsletters. Either make a
copy from your Groups’ issue, or send
a SASE to the Editor for one. The -
answers will be published next
month. :
One last item, rumor has it that the
DTP that Larry Kenny is working
on, will be released in about a month
or two. Keep posted for more details.
That's about it for this month, I'll
be back again real soon with more

YOUR
FLOPPIES
"""The new Electronics magazine has
an article on Anamartic's new Wafer
Stack silicon hard drives. Anamartic
is one of Sir Clive's other companies.
Interestingly enough; Fujitsu is a
major investor in this project
(Fujitsu also has alot to do with the
new "Poqet"). Tandem is also an
investor in Anamartic and may be
one of the first to use them in one of
their own products (OLTP system).
The "Wafer Stacks” are about 6"X
6" (soon to shrink to 5.25" and then
3.5"). The current product holds 40
MEGs with a 1 ms (FAST)access time.
You can stack up to 4 of these drives
together. Don't look for Clive to offer
one soon for the 288 as they are
selling for $11,680 each. While this
sounds like a fortune; it's not too bad
compared to other solid state drives.
DEC's ESE20 is a 120 MEG solid state
drive that sells for $120,000 where
as 160 MEG worth of Anamartics
Wafer Stack will go for about
$28,760 incuding controller and SCSI
1/F. The savings in cost come from
higher chip yeild as the entire wafer
is used instead of cutting up the
wafers to smaller chips to then be
wired back together. The bad bits
are mapped and indexed on a flash
EPROM so the drive will avoid them.
One other obvious benefit from this.
system is that the reliability is
excellent due to the lack of moving
parts. C'mon Clive, just throw one in
with every 288 (.and make up for
the loss in volume «grin»).
Two of Sir Clives other projects is a
small sattelite dish that's being
